Instructional Design: Course Development

The course "Instructional Design: Course Development" on FutureLearn is a three-week program designed to equip instructional designers with essential skills for effectively guiding subject matter experts (SMEs) through the course creation process. It requires approximately three hours of study per week and covers key stages of course development, from planning to quality assurance.

The course is structured into three main weekly modules. The first week focuses on course mapping, teaching learners how to create a blueprint that outlines course expectations and learning outcomes. The second week covers Learning Management System (LMS) development, including comparing different LMS platforms, creating course templates, and integrating external tools via LTI to enhance the learning experience. The final week emphasizes quality review, where participants learn to apply industry standards and evaluation techniques to ensure courses meet high-quality benchmarks and best practices in online education.

Led by experienced instructional designer Camille Funk, the course is interactive and encourages social learning through discussions and peer engagement. It is suitable for both new and experienced instructional designers aiming to build effective, consistent, and engaging online learning experiences. Upon completing 90% of the course steps and all assessments, learners can earn a certificate to validate their skills.
